We walked through the night. Probably in circles. Dionysus had one horse, we'd managed to lose one, and we traded off on the other one.

We were having dark thoughts, the four of us. At least I was.

Jalil was muttering to himself. David was trying to look bold and filled with purpose, but the burn wound was hurting him bad. It wasn't life threatening, it wasn't going to drag him down, but it must have hurt like hell.

Ganymede remained quiet and a little withdrawn, despite April's occasional efforts to engage him in conversation. I don't know what the girl was thinking. Zeus may have swung both way, but Ganymede didn't even cop cheap down-the-shirt glances or anything. April had no effect on him, and frankly, I was beginning to resent her for trying so hard. What, humans weren't good enough? She had to have some long-legged, lean, muscular, sweet-natured, incredibly handsome, barely dressed stud-muffin?

I mean, yeah, guys think that way. But I expected more of April.

Whatever happened to the idea of women caring more about sense of humor and inner beauty? Ganymede had no sense of humor at all. Unlike, say, me.

Dionysus was a monumental butt pain. Party boys are fun at parties, but the party was suspended for the moment. Party all gone, serious stuff to deal with, and every other word from his mouth was, “Shall we not have wenches? Should we not imbibe of the sacred vine?”

And he wasn't the fastest-moving god I've ever seen. He wanted to stop for a rest every few minutes, despite hogging the poor horse. Not to mention his annoying and tempting habit of causing barrels of wine and kegs of beer to appear out of nowhere.

But he told stories. Not great stories, but they filled the hours.

"Zeus, a great god, a good fellow, I love him like a father. He is my father, of course, but you know what I mean. But as great a god as he is, he cannot hold his mead. It's some strange quality of mead, I suppose, because he is very able to restrain his baser impulses when drinking wine or ale. But you pour a few barrels of mead in him and look out! Ha-ha! Many's the maidenly shepherd girl who was tending her flock in the foothills of Olympus, only to have Zeus appear disguised as a bull or a ram, drunk and randy, and ha! That's the truth of Herades's birth: Zeus was reeling, roaring drunk on mead.

"Anyway, there was this particular day, I remember it well, we'd all been enjoying the fruits of the vine, and Zeus got into the mead.

I said to him, 'Zeus, Father, you know how you get when you drink mead.' Artemis, who is a terrible prude, you know, said, 'Half the maidens between here and Troy know how he gets when he drinks mead.' So Zeus says, 'Only half? Pour me a tall one, Ganymede, I have work to do!'"

April stopped throwing herself at Ganymede long enough to say, “I can't imagine why people stopped worshiping you people.
